This is the latest film that I've seen recently. Nicole Kidman (Silvia Broome) is the leading actress who plays the Interpreter role. Silvia works in the United Nations and translates the language between English & African dialect (a rare dialect few people other than Silvia can understand).

She can speak the language pretty well due to she was born & raise up in Africa until her parents has been killed & she also felt disappointed on the political conflict within several parties in her country, therefore, she decide to leave her country & applied a job in U. N. to be able to live in USA.

One day she overheard the secret that she did not suppose to hear by accidentally, and she understand that she will be in danger and decide to call for help. Sean Pan (Tobin Keller) stars the Federal agent who seems like a bodyguard in the film just to protect Silvia won't be kill by the terrorist & also he'd like to find out if Silvia is telling the truth.

“ Established in 1946, the United Nations brought together its initial 51 member countries to maintain international peace and security, while facilitating advances in the humanitarian, social and economic welfare of its participating countries.

It's a great impact to our country – Taiwan. We must admit that Taiwan went through the hard time without U. N. protection even our economic growth pretty fast. Until now, our country still fight to join the U. N., and it has been lasted for 33 years already but didn't seems to be successfully due to China's pressure. China's economic growth pretty fast recently, we must aware that it will be more difficult to join U.N. than before, because economic is the power to drive worldwide countries to buy in China's one country policy. Taiwan will confront more difficult challenge in the future. I just wish there won't be any world war, we just need a peaceful world to be able to live on this earth.

Anyway, let's drop this seriously subject and talking some light stuff. Even we're unable to access to U.N., we're able to view what it looks like inside of the U.N in this film. The Interpreter is the first motion picture in history to receive inside access to the United Nations' headquarters (which is officially international territory) in New York.

The film reminds me that I work as an interpreter before. Cambridge Academy Hair Salon, which is my first interpreter job and the academy located in UK. One day I went to the salon and would like to have my hair cut, the hair salon owner who asked me if I'm interested to do the interpreter job. They will pay me 20 pounds for 3 hours, so I accepted the offer immediately.

The hair salon academy recruit students from overseas, such as HK, Taiwan & Japan. That's why they need the interpreter, who can translate English to Cantonese, Mandarin & Japanese. I'm in charge to be the Taiwanese student's interpreter.

Actually, those students who already have all the skills on hands, but they willing to learn the advance hair cutting & dyeing hair skills, that's why the learning courses only for 1 month and focus on what they'd like to learn only. They're here not only for learning new skills, but also they'd like to plan the trip to London & Paris. I soon make a good relationship with them, so they will tell me their difficulties while their stay in Cambridge. I will try to help them out even it's not in my duty hours.

I must said that the travel agency in Taiwan, which did not treat well on their customers as their first priority job. For example, they didn't help the students to get visa to Paris, but they bought their airline return tickets, which departure from Paris, not from London. Therefore, they must go to Paris to take airline back to Taiwan, otherwise, they will need to buy the return tickets from London again. In order to save their cost, I negotiated with the hair salon owner to swap their weekday tuition to weekend, so I can take them to London for getting a visa to Paris. Also, they will be able to have a short trip in London, too.

We need to arrive to London in the early morning due to we need to line up for access to the embassy. They only issue the visa for morning hours, even if you queue there for whole morning, but if you didn’t get in before 12:00pm, then you’d need to come back next day. We finally got in before 12:00pm and I helped them to issue the visa with the front desk. The front desk told me if they'd like to get visa, they need to provide the hotel reservation letter, the students told me that they haven’t done the reservation yet, but they've got hotel address & telephone number. I checked the time & found out that we still have 10 minutes left, therefore, I negotiated with the front desk if we're able to ask the hotel to fax the letter to the embassy. Of course, she won't accept it, they will only dealing your case until 12:00pm only. I asked her to give me a chance to make a call to Paris, and I definitely will out of embassy if they cannot provide the letter before 12:00pm. Finally, she compromised my idea & provided their fax number. I made a quick call to Paris & they also faxed the letter around 12:05pm. The bodyguard actually is going to ask us out, but the front desk allows us to wait for another 5 minutes. I'm so happy that they finally got the visa & made the trip to Paris.

I now realized that it's not an easy job to be an interpreter, sometimes I will have the argument with the salon owner due to some misunderstanding. After I back to Taiwan, I told myself that I won't get a full time job as an interpreter, but sometime I will do the interpreter job only for helping someone's favor. I deal with a business case for the people who from India and would like to buy the particular machine here. I know they're talking about the million dollars business. (I did not do the translating on price negotiation, but I know it costs more than millions just to buy a machine.) Anyway, I'm sure that the people who are the full-time interpreters, they must be pretty tough on dealing with these cases, because they're not only have the excellent language skill, they also need to be good at negotiation skill.

The U. N. interpreter will even play the important role on translating the languages, the words choices an Interpreter makes can often mean the difference between war and peace, especially a political-charge atmosphere place like the United Nation. I really admire their courage to choose this job.

If you would like to test your interpretation skill, welcome to check out The Interpreter official website under the "INTERPRET THIS" category, and to find out your score! Good Luck!
